Learn moreIn the year 2021 from January to December, the Zambia police at Lusaka division recorded a total number of 86 cases of mobile money fraud with the total amount of money amounting to k726,375. Out of 86 were cases of impersonation and 2 were cases of obtaining money on false pretense amounting to k7,550, the majority of the cases reported were mobile money fraud. The Zambian Cyber Security Initiative Foundation has so far received a report of 3 Cyber cases and 3 cases of Sextortion.
As the use of the internet and networked computers grow, new technologies such as cloud computing enable even greater technology advances. The occurrence of Cybercrimes is expected to grow as cybercriminals seek to exploit online and networked vulnerabilities in business networks. ZCSIF Research results are speaking dangerous realities. Mobile Money fraud remains the most common today. Numbers keep going up every day. It is also disheartening to learn than 80% of these cases involving usually smaller amounts are never reported and hence these figures are not captured by the mandated institutions. It is very imperative than ever that citizens should make reporting this class of Cybercrime to the nearest police stations for easy capture of statistics and appreciating the adverse effects of this scourge.
